DIY Lip Balm with Batana Oil and Ceramides

This DIY lip balm combines the unique benefits of batana oil with other amazing ingredients, like Ceramides.
It has a wonderful natural smell, remembering hazelnut and coffee thanks to batana oil, and beautifully slides on your lips leaving them soft, hydrated, and repaired.

In this blog post, I’ll walk you through my recipe step by step, share the benefits of each ingredient, and will give you tips to customize it to your liking!

Why Batana Oil for Lip Care?

Batana oil is a sensory-rich, deeply moisturizing and regenerating oil that we already explored together in this article.
While is largely used for haircare, it can also be a nice addition in any lip formula. It helps to restore moisture, repair damage and keep your lips feeling soft and protected. Also, an oil with a lovely aroma is always a great idea in lip products!

Ingredients and Benefits

Here’s the breakdown of the ingredients:

  • Kokum Butter:
A lightweight, non-comedogenic and non-greasy butter that deeply moisturizes and provides structure to the balm. Originally, I planned to use cocoa butter, that is the classic choice for lip balms due to its ability to add consistency, create a luxurious texture and enhance persistence. However, I was out of it, so I replaced it with kokum butter, practically the only butter that can really replace cocoa butter’s hardness. As you can imagine, if you don’t have kokum butter, cocoa butter is a perfect substitute.

  • Batana Oil:
The hero ingredient of this recipe! Batana oil is known for its deeply nourishing and reparative properties, making it ideal for soothing dry or chapped lips. It also has a lovely, natural aroma that adds a subtle charm to the balm. I’m always looking for naturally scented ingredients when I formulate a lip balm, like rose wax.
Make sure to buy a lovely scented one like this one and as explained in this reel that shows you how to select it properly.
If you don’t have it, replace it with coconut oil, which has a similar consistency in winter and a lovely scent.

  • Beeswax and Carnauba Wax:
These two waxes work together to add firmness and create a protective barrier that locks in moisture, ensuring long-lasting hydration. Carnauba wax can be replaced with candelilla. If you have beeswax only, you can replace Carnauba with beeswax but you could have to increase it a little bit to reach the same firmness.

  • Castor Oil:
A classic in lip balm formulations, castor oil provides a beautiful glossy finish and delivers lasting hydration for smooth, luscious lips. If you’re after a lighter, matte effect, you can swap castor oil for a lighter oil, such as jojoba.

  • Fractionated Coconut Oil with Ceramides III:
This luxurious addition boosts the balm’s barrier-repairing properties, keeping lips hydrated, regenerated and protected. If you don’t have Ceramides III, you can substitute this with an oil that naturally supports ceramide production, like sunflower or oat oil. For more details on how to prepare the ceramide III oil and how to replace it, check out my guide here.

  • Liposoluble Hyaluronic Acid:
This ingredient enhances hydration, adds a rich feel and gives lips a soft, youthful plumpness. Should be added during the heat phase. If you don’t have it on hand, simply increase the amount of batana oil by 1 gram. Not a real functional replacement, but you need to keep the formula balanced.
Find more info about it here. Make sure you are using the liposoluble version, not the classical hydrosoluble one!

  • Vitamin E:
A powerful antioxidant that not only protects your lips but also extends the shelf life of your balm, keeping it fresh for longer.
