The Ultimate Travel Hack: Mini DIY Solid Cosmetics

Traveling light is an art, especially when it comes to packing your skincare and beauty essentials. We talked about it in this blog post about travel friendly and summer ready DIY cosmetics as well. With the need to keep things compact while traveling, finding ways to save space in your bag is essential.
But what if I told you there’s a simple, cost-effective solution that not only saves space but also adds a touch of beauty that sparkles joy to your travel routine?

The Secret to Space-Saving Travel: Mini DIY Solid Cosmetics

When I make my solid DIY cosmetics, such as lotion bars, shampoos or syndets (find my recipes here), I always set aside some of the mixture to create mini samples. These tiny, travel-friendly versions of my favorite products are perfect for a weekend getaway or even a long trip.

How to Make Your Own Travel-Sized Cosmetics

The process is straightforward and fun. After creating your DIY solid cosmetics, simply pour the remaining mixture into small molds. I prefer using molds designed for candy gummies - they’re just the right size for single-use cosmetics. These molds come in various shapes and designs, making your DIY products not only practical but also visually appealing, sparkling joy to your skincare routine!

Once your products have set (put them in the fridge for at least 1-2 hours), pop them out of the molds and store them in a mini jar or container.
Just like that, you have everything you need for a weekend trip without the bulk of full-sized products.

The Versatility and Practicality of Mini Solid Cosmetics

These mini versions are incredibly versatile: they fit neatly into any handbag, are perfect for on-the-go touch-ups, handy to keep in your bag when you head to the office and make excellent cosmetic samples for friends and family.

For DIY cosmetic formulators, they’re also a practical way to compare similar formulas and monitor their stability over time. Plus, these mini-sized products are great for testing new formulations or sharing your creations with others without committing to a full-sized batch.

Finding the Perfect Mini Molds

If you’re excited to try this out, there are plenty of different molds available that are perfect for creating your mini solid cosmetics. Here are a few recommendations:

  1. Silicone Candy Gummy Molds: these molds come in a variety of shapes, from hearts and stars to cat paws and bears, making your DIY products both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Perfect for single-use.Their adorable designs add a charming touch to your creations. Who can resist their cuteness?

  2. Chocolate Silicone Bar Molds: Perfect for crafting travel-sized lotion bars or solid shampoos, the cosmetic made with these molds are compact and fit seamlessly into small containers or tins. They’re ideal for long weekends or week-long trips.

  3. Mini Lip Balm Tubes: Empty lip balm tubes are perfect for creating mini versions of your favorite lip balms or solid perfumes, but also for practical solid lotions. I love the square container version, it’s so cute!

  4. Mini Lip Gloss Tubes: While not suitable for solid cosmetics, these mini tubes are perfect for storing your favorite liquid cosmetics. You can fill them with serums, face oils, lip glosses or similar products. These tiny tubes typically hold about 1.2 ml, making them an ideal size for on-the-go use. Find an example here.
