7 Naturally scented Oils for Sensory-Rich DIY Cosmetics

There’s something magical about DIY Beauty ingredients that engage all your senses: the way they feel on your skin, the way they look and most importantly, the way they smell. A scent can transport you, evoke emotions, and turn a simple skincare ritual into a moment of pure joy.

For me, skincare has never been just about function. It’s about creating something that sparks joy, something that makes you want to use it
not just because it delivers amazing results, but also because it feels like a little luxury. Luxurious and pleasurable as it is effective.
That’s why I’m obsessed with finding plant-based ingredients that smell as good as they perform.

So I went on a deep dive and uncovered some of the most sensorial, beautifully scented vegetable oils NOT essential oils, but rich, nourishing vegetable oils like coconut. Unlike essential oils, which are highly concentrated and can be off-limits for those with sensitive skin, allergies, or during pregnancy, these vegetable oils offer a natural, gentle fragrance. They bring both scent and skincare benefits, making your DIY beauty cosmetics a true sensory experience.

Why Naturally Scented Oils? The Beauty of Sensorial Cosmetics

Imagine this: You wake up in the morning, and instead of slathering on a bland moisturizer, you reach for a golden oil elixir that smells like sweet tropical fruit and warm floral blooms. The scent lingers on your skin, delicate yet present, wrapping you in a natural perfume that makes you feel like you just stepped into a secret garden.

This is what I call sensorial beauty, cosmetics that both work and make you feel something. I believe skincare should be an experience: the moment you open a jar, the first touch on your skin, the way it melts in, leaving a glow and a lingering scent that makes you breathe in just a little deeper.

Each of these natural plant oils is a fragrance in itself, and the best part? They also nourish your skin and hair while making your DIY cosmetics smell divine.

So let’s explore these nature’s perfumes and how you can use them to create your own sensorial cosmetics and beauty rituals.

Formulator’s Tips: How to Maximize the Natural Scent of These Oils

Unlike essential oils, which have an intense, noticeable fragrance, these vegetable oils offer a delicate, intimate scent, a whisper of fragrance meant for your own joy and sensory pleasure. To truly experience their natural aroma, you’ll need to formulate wisely.

Since these oils require a significant percentage to fully enjoy their scent, they work best in oil-based formulations where they make up the majority of the formula. Solid lotion bars, body or face oils and balms are perfect choices.
In contrast, O/W emulsions, like lightweight creams, don’t contain enough oil to make their fragrance noticeable. If you still want to use them in an emulsion, opt for a W/O (water-in-oil) formula, which contains a higher oil phase and will better retain the scent.

Key Formulation Guidelines:

  • Use at least 30% of the chosen oil for the fragrance to be perceptible.
  • Avoid to use with strongly scented ingredients that could overpower or mask the delicate aroma. Choose neutral-smelling ingredients like white beeswax, coco-caprylate or fractionated coconut oil instead.
  • Best product types: Face & body oils, solid lotion bars, rich balms or oil serums where these oils are the main base.
  • Of the oils mentioned, Monoi and Pequi have the strongest scents, making them easier to incorporate in smaller amounts. Coconut and Cocoa are more subtle, while Plum Kernel has an extremely delicate aroma, meaning it should be used as the main ingredient if you truly want to experience its scent. A face oil with Plum Kernel as the base, enriched with just a few high-performance actives, would be a great choice.
  • Of the seven oils mentioned, Passion Fruit Oil and Plum Kernel Oil are non-comedogenic, making them ideal for facial skincare. They absorb well without clogging pores, making them perfect for lightweight face oils and serums.
  • When choosing these oils, always check the product description and processing method before purchasing. Some oils are refined, deodorized, or overly processed, which can strip away their natural scent, leaving you with a neutral oil that lacks the aromatic beauty you’re looking for. Look for cold-pressed, unrefined, or virgin oils to ensure you’re getting their true fragrance. For example, virgin coconut oil carries a delicious tropical scent, while fractionated coconut oil is completely odorless. The same applies to cocoa butter. If deodorized, it will lose its warm, chocolatey aroma. Always read the supplier’s notes and choose high-quality, minimally processed oils if your goal is to enjoy their natural fragrance and sensorial benefits.
